CHAT secures funding for affordable pantry

Churches Housing Action Team (CHAT) is delighted to share that we have been awarded funding through the The King Charles III Coronation Food Project to strengthen our affordable pantry and support more people across Mid Devon.

This funding will help us continue and grow our affordable food pantry, which was developed in response to increasing demand for emergency food support. While crisis food remains vital, our pantry offers a more planned, dignified, and sustainable way for people to access food, helping households to budget, plan meals, and regain a sense of stability.

A key part of this project is continuing our Saturday opening, ensuring that working households can access food and support outside of standard office hours. Alongside this, trained advisors will be available during pantry sessions, meaning people can access advice and food in one place, at the point they need it most.

The project will also introduce practical cooking support, including slow cookers, air fryers, and simple recipe packs linked to pantry food. We will also be running regular slow cooker sessions, where people can share a meal together and take home ingredients to recreate it themselves.

These additions will help people make the most of the food they receive, reduce waste, and cook affordable, nutritious meals at home. Just as importantly, the pantry provides a welcoming space where people can connect with others, share experiences, and feel part of a community.

This project has been shaped by the experiences of people using our services, particularly those balancing work with rising living costs and limited access to support during the week.

We are incredibly grateful for this funding, which will allow us to continue supporting people not just in moments of crisis, but in building longer-term stability and wellbeing.
